Q. What is Toad for Oracle Sensitive Data Protection Module?

Toad for Oracle Sensitive Data Protection Module is a new module available for Toad for Oracle users.  This new module contains two areas of functionality – Sensitive Data Protection Awareness and Sensitive Data Protection Search – which enable developers and DBAs to work effectively with the sensitive data in their environment.

Q. What is Sensitive Data Awareness?

The Sensitive Data Awareness features in the Toad for Oracle Professional edition alert developers of data columns that may contain sensitive data as they write code in the Editor or as they create and alter tables.  The developers can quickly get information on these columns – including what kind of sensitive data they may contain and what protective measures are in place for that column (audit, redaction and encryption policies) through a simple mouse over.

Once the field is identified in the Editor, users with the correct database privileges can also r-mouse click on the field to add protection to this field – like encrypting this column.

Users will also see an indicator (orange “dot”) in alter and create table windows flagging column names that may contain sensitive data (based on column naming patterns).

Q. What is Sensitive Data Protection Search?

The Sensitive Data Protection Search capabilities allow users to scan schemas – looking at both patterns in columns naming conventions as well as polling actual data to identify columns that may contain sensitive data.  Once these columns are discovered, the user can do a deeper dive to understand what protection policies are in place for these columns (audit, redaction and encryption) and, if needed, add new policies to these columns on the fly.

Q. How do I edit/define Sensitive Data Patterns?

Users can define what “Sensitive Data” means to them by customizing the pre-loaded Sensitive Data patterns (both for column naming and data contents) in the View > Toad Options > Sensitive Data Protection area.

Q. How do I get to the new Toad for Oracle Sensitive Data Protection Module features?

Toad for Oracle Sensitive Data Protection Module features were released in Toad for Oracle v13.1 and v13.1.1.  The Sensitive Data Awareness features are part of Toad for Oracle Professional Edition (or above).  The Sensitive Data Protection Search features require an additional purchase in addition to owning Toad for Oracle Professional addition (or above).  For more information on how to activate the product or the trial – go here.
